The Indiana Rural Health Association (IRHA) is seeking a qualified and motivated candidate for a full-time Program Director position. This role requires a dynamic, adaptable professional with the ability to take initiative and lead projects as they evolve.

As a grant-funded organization, IRHA assigns Program Directors to oversee specific projects or initiatives as needed. While duties may vary depending on the assignment, the core responsibilities of all IRHA Program Directors include:

  • Lead all aspects of assigned programs, networks, or grants
  • Direct, coordinate, and assign activities as defined by the scope of each project
  • Manage budgets, request invoices, and monitor financial activity as appropriate
  • Communicate regularly with key stakeholders, partners, and members
  • Prepare and submit timely, accurate reports and documentation
  • Oversee and support the work of coordinators and data coordinators
  • Support additional IRHA functions as assigned

Current Assignment of this Program Director Position
The Program Director position currently being recruited will serve as the lead for the Graduate Medical Education Technical Assistance Center (GME TAC). This position will provide strategic leadership, technical expertise, and stakeholder coordination to expand and strengthen graduate medical education and physician workforce development, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

 Key responsibilities specific to the GME-TAC Program Director include:

  • Lead the development and day-to-day operation of Indiana's statewide Graduate Medical Education (GME) Technical Assistance Center, serving as a primary resource for existing and emerging GME programs, healthcare organizations, state agencies, and other partners working to expand physician training opportunities across Indiana.
  • Provide expert technical assistance and consultation to existing and prospective GME programs related to program development, ACGME accreditation readiness, application and document review, site visit preparation, program requirements, institutional readiness, and other operational considerations associated with developing and sustaining residency programs.
  • Guide hospitals, health systems, clinics, and other healthcare organizations through GME planning and readiness activities, including assessment of organizational capacity, clinical training infrastructure, faculty and preceptor needs, potential barriers, financial sustainability, and opportunities for program growth.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with GME leaders and key stakeholders statewide, including Designated Institutional Officials (DIOs), Program Directors, GME administrators, hospitals and health systems, medical schools, residency programs, state agencies, professional organizations, and rural and underserved healthcare providers.
  • Monitor and communicate emerging GME policies, accreditation requirements, funding opportunities, and workforce trends, translating complex information into practical guidance, educational resources, tools, and recommendations for Indiana GME programs and stakeholders.
  • Support organizations in identifying sustainable approaches to GME financing and program development, including navigation of state, federal, and private funding opportunities and coordination with appropriate subject-matter experts when specialized financial, reimbursement, accreditation, or other expertise is needed.
  • Oversee implementation and administration of GME-related grant programs, including Curriculum Enhancement Grants and Preceptor/Rural Track Grants, ensuring appropriate outreach, technical assistance, award administration, monitoring, documentation, and alignment with program objectives.
  • Design and coordinate statewide GME education, professional development, networking, and stakeholder engagement activities, including presentations, workshops, site visits, learning opportunities, and resources that strengthen GME leadership, faculty, preceptors, and program staff.
  • Advance strategies that expand rural and underserved clinical training opportunities and strengthen Indiana's physician workforce pipeline, with particular emphasis on increasing rural training experiences, developing new training sites, building organizational capacity, and improving recruitment and retention of residents, faculty, and practicing physicians.
  • Provide strategic leadership, project management, and accountability for TAC activities, including development and execution of annual workplans, tracking program goals and deliverables, evaluating program effectiveness and outcomes, supervising TAC staff and consultants, and ensuring timely completion of required reports and deliverables to IRHA and the Indiana Department of Health.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required (healthcare or business administration preferred)
  • Minimum of 2 years of GME experience 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities independently
  • Must reside in Indiana
